David Mitton's research is oriented towards the mechanical properties of biological tissues (such as muscles and bones) and assessment of their mechanical properties in vivo using non-invasive techniques. Among the biological tissues he has focused on the cortical bone and its failure properties to predict bone fracture. Cortical bone is a multiscale material whose toughness depends on the speed of loading. The link between the toughness and the microstructure of the cortical bone is not well defined and may depend on the anatomical site considered (radius, femur, tibia…). Time dependency of cortical bone mechanical properties leads to challenges for bone fracture prediction.
